NeuroAIDS
Enriched by a critical mass of interdisciplinary researchers and clinician specialists in infectious disease and HIV/AIDS within the School of Medicine, the Department's NeuroAIDS research program is strongly collaborative and translational in orientation and, by force of the pandemic, international in scope. With an emphasis on HIV-related neurocognitive disorders and sensory neuropathy, faculty projects aim toward better understanding of the CNS complications of AIDS, including the dynamics of HIV and chemokines in cerebrospinal fluid during highly active antiretroviral therapy.
The overriding goal is to develop more comprehensive measures of treatment outcomes and to evaluate novel clinical interventions in HIV neurological disorders, particularly in the context of copathogens and comorbidities. The ongoing, invaluable partnership with the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center at UCSD for technical assistance and resources has enabled the implementation of large-scale multi-center clinical trials as well as the international expansion and outreach to high-risk populations in medically underserved settings.
